I remember Mr. Hypo(dermic) from my own diagnosis at age 7 in 1976. It was distributed by the Ames Company which was a subsidiary of Miles Laboratories, which would be acquired (and the acquiring company then acquired, and so on) by what is today known as Roche Diagnostics/Roche Diabetes Care (best known as the seller of Accu-Chek testing supplies). I remember not being very convinced that he was my friend, but someone in marketing thought it was a good idea. I also found the name odd, as Hypo was not only a syringe, but low blood sugar, so they might have found a more suitable name. I also remember that on pages 2-3 of this little book were references to people I'd NEVER heard of (or just barely), including tennis star Bill Talbert (little wonder why I didn't know him; he played back in the 1940's and 1950's), and I only knew about one of the other guys mentioned -- Mayor LaGuardia -- because an airport in New York was named after him, but again, he was deceased ... and then they mention Thomas Edison? I knew the name as inventor of the incandescent light bulb. But really, they mentioned a famous inventor who was alive 100 years earlier, and that was the best they could come up with? Regardless, I appreciate that there is SOMEONE out there who remembers this little booklet aside from me! Thanks for sharing all of the images.
